CHECK IN for Week 37: Shop Lift

Checking in on Week 37′s Task of SHOP LIFT.

This week you were to buy NOTHING…not at a store or online…and to LIFT your awareness of how you SHOP.

If you are trying this, you might be right near the tail end of your “no-buy week”.

How is it going?

What are you noticing?

How is it feeling?

Have there been temptations, a “giving in”, or has it been fairly easy?

What I have learned from doing this exercise many times throughout the past several years, is…

  • I do have a tendency to impulse buy.  By waiting to purchase, I realize I didn’t need that thing I thought I wanted.  I’ve saved a lot of money this way.
  • By waiting to purchase, I had more time to think of what I really want and choose more wisely. This sometimes fell in the category of price, more my style, better quality, or functionality.  I have been satisfied with everything I have purchased after waiting.  Obviously, I’ve learned to WAIT much more often before purchasing.
  • Not spending made me a better steward of my money, meaning I directed in areas that were important to me, like travel instead of another plant for my garden or another pair of shoes.
  • I, in reality, have more money than I thought because I’m more conscious of where it is going.
  • I have way less stuff.  My house is easy to keep tidy and clean. This has given me more peace and more time, as I’m not stressing out over keeping up with so much stuff.

Before you purchase something, beyond food and basic necessities, you might want to put it through some criteria you make for yourself.

Purchasing items for your home, think about these kind of questions…

  • what do you want your HOME to be about? What is its function?  (gatherings, parties, solitude, restoration, etc.)
  • If you could pick 3-5 adjectives to describe how you’d like your home to be, what would they be?  (cozy, peaceful, colorful, light-hearted, welcoming, etc)
  • what is your style?  (elegant, country, artsy, farmhouse, cottage, classic, antique, rustic, whimsical, modern, urban, clean lines, eclectic, etc)

I do think about these things before I purchase anything for my home.  I also ask myself does it have a FUNCTION…a job, a purpose?   I’m very practical!   And, do I think it is BEAUTIFUL?  I love things to LOOK a certain way, so it has to meet the BEAUTIFUL TO ME question.

You can ask similar questions in regards to clothes…

  • what kind of clothes fit your FUNCTION(S)…play, exercise, work, hanging out, etc.
  • If you could pick 3-5 adjectives to describe the kind of wardrobe you’d like, what would they be?  (easy-care, comfy, classic, everything goes with everything, elegant, artsy, fewer pieces, etc.)
  • what is your clothing style?  (classic, boho, artsy, total comfort, trendy, elegant, etc.)

Again, I think about these things before I purchase clothes.  And, I make sure I absolutely love how it fits, love the fabric, and that it will go with several other things I have in my closet.

(If you are not sure of your STYLE or what you really want, try using PINTEREST.   It is a great place to save pictures of home goods and clothing that you like.  After awhile you will notice what is catching your eye.   This will help you pinpoint your style.)

Feel free to share what you learned from your SHOP LIFT week in the comments.  I’d love to know.

Cheering You on to a Whole Shop Lifted & Criteria Heart,

2018 Week 18: Put On the Put Off

8download (1)

Week 18’s task for 50 Weeks to a Lighter More Loving You is to PUT ON THE PUT OFF!

More clearly, to PUT ON your calendar that APPOINTMENT that you’ve been PUTTING OFF!

I do believe that most of us dread a few things…

  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • Tax Accountants
  • Tests…of any kind!

Sometimes we even put off things like…

  • pest control,
  • tree trimmers,
  • car maintenance,
  • that needed massage or manicure.

What have you been PUTTING OFF scheduling?

This week is the week to pick  up the phone and make that appointment.

Leave in the comments that you PUT IT ON, and I’ll send you a big cheer!

Encouraging you to a Whole PUT IT ON Heart,

CHECK IN for Week Seven: NIKE DAY

Checking in for Week Seven!   Have you had your NIKE DAY yet?  Have you taken 1 minute or 10 minutes to take care of that small thing (or things) that are adding to your stress level and TO DO list?

What is so important about JUST DOING the small things?

If you noticed from last week, most of the things I listed are in regards to my home. Maybe your list is the same way.

Have you ever thought of your HOME as your HAVEN?  That place you can relax in, be recharged in, be YOU in?

I dare say that it is the little things that pile up that can reduce our HAVEN to a BOX full of stressful things to do!  There will ALWAYS be something TO DO with our homes, but the small tasks take little time and add to the peace and your ability to relax.

How you do anything is how you do everything.

I don’t know who said that, but I’ve heard it over and over in my life.  I’ve learned that if I let the little things pile up, it suddenly becomes a dreaded, huge, long project!  Doing small bits over and over makes up keep easier, more doable, and less dread-filled!

Areas where this has proved to be true are doing my taxes, planning meals, house cleaning, yard maintenance, relationship issues, dental care, body care!

My time is more mine and my mind more peaceful.

Spending 5 to 10 minutes here and there on something (meal planning, grocery list making, taxes, flossing :)), actually gives me more time.  I spend less time wondering what’s for dinner; more positive thoughts knowing it’s healthy.  Less time shuffling through a year of receipts; more time cuddled in a chair reading a good book.  Less time in the dental chair; more money in my pocket.

The irony of planning and NIKE-ing those small things, which seems rigid, OCD-ish, less free-spirited, is that it gives you more time, less obsessing, and more freedom.

I’d love to know what you did on your NIKE DAY!  Send me and email or leave a post.

Cheering you on to a Whole Freedom Filled Heart,

2018 Week Seven: NIKE Day

Week’s Seven step for 50 Weeks to a Lighter More Loving You is to have a NIKE DAY!

That thing that you see over and over and say to yourself, “I really need to do that!”

That thing that bugs you every time you see it.

That thing that you know would probably take you less than 10 minutes but is still undone.

  • the dog nose print on the window
  • the dog paw print on the door
  • the button that has come off your shirt or sweater
  • the hole in your quilt (or something) that you’ve wanted to sew
  • the cobweb in the corner
  • the dust bunnies under your sofa/bed/table
  • the dust on your light fixture/ceiling fan
  • the light bulb that needs to be replaced
  • the pile of papers that need to be sorted
  • the pen jar that has pens that don’t work and could use a go through
  • the bag you made of donated things from week one that are still lying around
  • the trash can that is yucky and needs a wash out
  • the medicine cabinet that has gooey rings from medicine cabinet things

Can you relate?  Many of those things are my own “things I see that bug me”!

Just how long did I think it would take to bend down and get the Windex, stand up to grab a paper towel, and walk to the front door and swipe away that doggie nose print!!??   I must have thought it would take hours because its had been driving me nuts for a month…or more…and I did nothing about it!!!

I finally did my NIKE DAY and the nose print took less than 1 minute to clear away.  And while I had that paper towel and Windex, I cleaned away a dog paw print, swiped a couple more windows, cleaned around a door knob or two, and wiped some grimy finger prints from a couple of light switches.  I was done in less than 10 minutes!

I am no longer adding to my TO DO list and stress level when I walk out the door and see the nose print, paw print, grunge, and grime!

What small thing is adding to your STRESS and TO DO List?  This is your week to do it!   Pick a day.  Plan your 1 minute…or 10 minutes…and do that thing…or a few things!!

Have a Whole NIKE’D Heart Week,
